The 28-year-old Jamaican slugger used his five-inch reach advantage to dominate almost the entire fight. Donaire had a moment at the end of the second round where he hurt Walters with a hard left hook, but it came right before the bell rang.
Walters (25-0, 21 KOs), a fairly unknown fighter from Jamaica, punctuated his breakthrough performance by knocking down Donaire (33-3) for the first two times in the four-division champion’s career. The ‘axe-man’ chopped down Donaire in 6th round.
‘Nonito Donaire failed to defend his WBA Super Featherweight title, losing by knockout in the sixth round against Jamaican Nicholas Walters on Sunday (PHL time) at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.
Donaire absorbed his first knockout and third loss in total, along with 33 wins with 21 coming off knockouts.
